Valdez Pier, Mountains and Freighter

On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez ran aground at Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound. At the time, I understood it was a massive oil spill, but I didn't fully appreciate the significance of where it happened. Visiting Valdez (pronounced Valdeez) and seeing the surrounding landscape made the scale of that loss feel much more real.
I was shocked by how beautiful this area is, from its abundant wildlife to jaw-dropping glaciers and vivid alpine tundra around Thompson Pass. It's a must-stop if you're visiting coastal Alaska. In fact, it's where Alaska started taking the crown from Hawaii as the most beautiful place in America for me.
A boat cruise is a great way to explore the fjords, but that's just the beginning. Rent a car, or make Alaska a road trip like I did. Highly recommended, though it's a journey! Take long hikes, explore the tundra around Thompson Pass, and stop for the waterfalls in Keystone Canyon. So much to see!!! More photos to come from this incredible area.
